New York – Access Now recently urged Zoom to issue regular transparency reports, which would show how the company responds to government and other third-party requests for user data and clarify its policies on security matters like encryption of its services and data retention.
On April 1, Zoom CEO Eric Yuan, in response to Access Now’s letter and mounting pressure from civil society and policymakers, announced a series of measures the company will take to improve transparency, including “preparing a transparency report that details information related to requests for data, records, or content.”
“We commend Zoom’s decision to provide regular transparency reports,” said Isedua Oribhabor, U.S. Policy Analyst at Access Now. “We called on Zoom to demonstrate that they take the rights of their users seriously. This step indicates that they are listening. We urge other companies to follow suit. Transparency reporting is a necessity for any company that handles user data, not just for typical ‘tech’ companies.”
“We appreciate Zoom acting quickly and decisively on transparency reporting,” said Eric Null, U.S. Policy Manager at Access Now. “Zoom’s action is one step in the right direction toward ensuring the service is safe and transparent as millions more people use the service in these exceptional times.”
