Next week, I have been invited to represent Access Now and our broader community at the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
I have discussed it with the team and have decided to attend. Why? Because this is going to be a gathering of many of the world’s most impactful movers and shakers from industry, government, and international civil society. And the topic is to discuss the goal of “Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World.”
The agenda covers issues ranging from the rise of artificial intelligence and businesses’ responsibility to protect human rights, to the role of technology in humanitarian crises and sustainable development, to shrinking civil society spaces and accountable governance.
These topics are important to us, and they raise questions about privacy, free expression, digital security, and other topics that are central to Access Now’s mission to defend and extend the rights of users at risk.
I have also been given an opportunity to speak on the official program, and I want to be sure that I bring our community’s voices directly into the room.

What message do you think needs to be shared with the world’s leaders in Davos? This is a rare opportunity for internet users to speak out about human rights in a global forum — and what happens there often shapes global public policy for years to come.

This is another important avenue through which individuals from around the world can share their perspective and highlight issues most important to them. It is going to take all of us working together to combat the forces that would oppress, marginalize, and exploit. But more than just react to the bad, we must proactively build the world in which all of us can live each day with dignity, express ourselves freely, and exercise all of our rights to the utmost — regardless of who we are, where we live, or what platforms we choose.
